Idylls Press releases two new Catholic novels in October, 2006
SALEM, OR – July 17, 2006 – Idylls Press has announced therelease of two new works of Catholic fiction in October, 2006.
WOLFPROOF, by Maureen Doyle McQuerry, a schoolteacher in WashingtonState, is a young adult fantasy about a trio of middle-schoolchildren who, with the aid of a mysterious old woman and a magicalwolf, do battle with an ancient, one-eyed Evil out of Celticmythology.
AWAITING ORDERS by Farrell O’Gorman, an assistant professor ofEnglish at Mississippi State University, is set during the first Gulf War. The adult literary novel tells the story of an ambitious young naval officer, stationed at a Temporary Personnel Unit in peacetime California, whose too comfortable life leads to a sudden act of violence, and an unexpected opportunity for change.
Both McQuerry and O’Gorman have published articles, poetry and book-length non-fiction. WOLFPROOF and AWAITING ORDERS are theirfirst published novels. Idylls Press will release both titles inhardcover and softcover editions.
"In many ways, the books couldn’t be more different," said Debra Murphy, the publisher and co-founder of Idylls Press. "WOLFPROOF is solidly in the tradition of British Christian fantasy writers like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. AWAITING ORDERS, on the other hand, stems from a very American vein of Catholic realism, reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor and Ron Hansen. Both are first and foremost good stories, good reads, beautifully written.”
In a thriving market for Christian fiction among Evangelicals, Murphy and her husband started Idylls Press in 2004, convinced that there was a hole in the publishing market for quality fiction that would address more Catholic (and occasionally controversial) themes and sensibilities in a contemporary way.
Idylls Press is also developing an imprint of "Catholic Fiction Classics" devoted to largely out-of-print works by Catholic novelists. The first book in the series is an illustrated edition of G.K. Chesterton’s THE MAN WHO WAS THURSDAY. The second "classic"will be Henry Harland’s Italian romance, THE CARDINAL’S SNUFF BOX, which will be released in November of 2006.
